Lot 1899
1846-D. NGC graded MS-62. Well struck and untoned with lovely reflective surfaces. Only 19,303 minted. With a mintage moderately higher than other early Dahlonega dates in the 1840s, the 1846-D is one of the more available Dahlonega quarter eagles. There are perhaps 175-200 coins known with at least three-quarters of these in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine category. Low-end AU coins are reasonably easy to find, but the 1846-D becomes a challenging issue in the Mint State grades and a major rarity in MS-62 and above. The obverse is absolutely fully struck with no weakness on the hair or the denticles. On the reverse, some lightness shows on the denticles from 5 o'clock to 9 o'clock. The central reverse is bold and there is no sign of any weakness on the eagle's left (facing) leg.

A few very fine hairlines (not from cleaning) can be seen on the obverse, but the fields are exceptionally clean for an issue that is almost always seen with severe marks. Unlike the Green Pond MS-62 specimen, there no mint-made reverse planchet flake at the base of the TA in STATES, instead, the reverse is quite clean. Pop 4; 3 finer with 2 in 63, 1 in 64 (PCGS # 7742) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

Lot 1903
1859 Type 2. NGC graded MS-64 CAC Approved. A frosty untoned specimen. This is a lovely, healthy-glowing specimen that comes close to the Gem class, one whose full-color obverse and reverse being essentially untoned, beams with frosty luster. Regarding this date, the clearest details are found throughout the peripheral areas and also encompassing the key centers which are crystal clear as noted in hair curls and eagle’s plumage and shield. Pop 2; 1 finer in 67.

Die characteristics: A modified reverse design with smaller letters and arrows was introduced on Philadelphia isues from 1859 through 1907. (A few Philadelphia Mint pieces were made in 1859, 1860, and 1861 with the old Type 1 Large Letterse reverse design.).

1873. Closed 3. PCGS graded MS-64. In an OGH. A splendid high quality coin for the 1873 issue, this example displays almost enthralling golden color whose satin surface is untoned. Lot 1910
1881. PCGS graded Proof 64 Deep Cameo. Well struck with glittering uniform golden-orange sunset toning. Only 51 Proofs struck for this rare low mintage date. A splendid glittering specimen that displays sharp frosty devices, sweet mirror "orange peel" fields, and grand eye appeal. The 1881 quarter eagle is a very rare issue with a total mintage of fewer than 700 pieces (this figure includes business strikes as well as Proofs). All things considered the present Proof Liberty quarter eagle is among the finest specimens of U.S. gold coinage of this year ever catalogued by the present writer, but you will have to form your own opinion. Only 51 Proof quarter eagles were made during the year, with a tiny fraction able to match the quality seen here, as is attested by the PCGS Census data. John Dannreuther and Jeff Garrett in their Official Red Book of Auction Records 2000-2006 enumerate a tiny handful of appearances of 1881 Proof quarter eagles, but none with grades higher than Proof 65. Pop 4; 1 finer in 64+ (PCGS # 97907) .

Note: The 1881 quarter eagle has a business strike mintage of only 640 pieces, the third-lowest production for a Liberty quarter eagle issue, which makes it one of the most difficult Philadelphia dates to find for the series.

1888. NGC graded Proof 64 Cameo CAC Approved. A glittering cameo Proof specimen and quite choice for the grade. A hint of golden-orange toning adds to its appeal. Only 97 Proofs struck. Don't miss the lovely toning on both sides, and it has a nice sparkle as expected for a coin of this period. Philadelphia struck few Proofs for the year, only a handful of which PCGS has graded this high, and a few higher. The strike and surfaces are exceptional, while the quality of the fields and devices simply can't be beat. A premier coin that exudes the classic appeal American numismatics has to offer. 1888. NGC graded Proof 63 Ultra Cameo. Well struck with some minor hairlines in the obverse fields. Only 97 struck. Rich yellow gold, a bright and even shade, with nicely reflective and unclouded fields. The strike is better than often seen, with the delicate hair fully defined. The overall eye appeal is, in a word, quite the thing -- this piece looks like a Liberty Quarter Eagle Proof should, and can be proudly displayed amidst pieces of this Type in any grade. The devices are finely frosted on both sides and stand out in excellent contrast to the reflective fields. Pop 1; 2 finer with 1 in 67*, 1 in 68.

Lot 1918
1898. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo CAC Approved. Well struck an untoned. Only 165 struck. A visually pleasing cameo Proof of the date, here with frosted motifs and deeply mirrored fields that display much mint brilliance. An attractive Liberty Proof from a small mintage, all delivered from the Medal Department at the Mint throughout the year, and as called for by public demand. Fewer than half of the original number are still extant, which makes for a certain amount of difficulty when today's collectors desire a delightful Choice Proof of the date like this Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. The low census certainly speaks volumes about the inherent quality of this beautiful coin: Pop 7; 31 finer.

Lot 1921
1903. NGC graded MS-68. Well struck and ablaze brilliant untoned luster. Another near perfect specimen! This is an amazing Liberty quarter eagle irrespective of date. The surfaces are aglow in rich golden color that accents the keen sharp strike. The otherwise rich endowment of mint frost thins to modest satiny in the fields, a feature that is fully appreciable in the absence of grade-limiting contact marks. The only evident pedigree marker, and it is not in the least distracting to the exquisite eye appeal, is a faint pinch in the field between the back of the eagle’s neck and the O of OF. This is the highest grade assigned by the grading service: Pop 5; none finer (PCGS # 7855) .

1903. NGC graded MS-68. Boldly struck and untoned. An immaculate gem that is virtually perfect! Yearly mintage figures for the Liberty quarter eagle failed to top 1 million coins from 1862 through the end of the series in 1907. The 1895 (6,119 pieces produced) is generally regarded as the last of the rare dates (although the 1896-1907 issues are scarce to one degree or another in the finer Mint State grades). A resplendent coin, both sides of which show intense luster with a frosty sheen that becomes modest brightness in the fields at direct angles. Bold sharp striking detail is seen throughout, with not a single area revealing an abrasion of note. Will easily eclipse any other coin you put in your set of the finest 19th century gold Type coins. 1903. NGC graded Proof 64. A fully glittering untoned Proof and quite choice for the grade. Only 197 struck. Brilliant and reflective surfaces. The obverse and reverse offer an all-brilliant finish seen on these, both sides intensely pleasing in that respect. Not a great rarity but one any collector would enjoy viewing and studying. While a fair number of Proofs of the date were struck it is doubtful if more than a few dozen of those are as Choice today. It is not at all likely that all pieces found buyers; probably they didn’t. Some may have been melted at the time. Pop 26; 29 finer (PCGS # 7929) .

1906. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Star. A glorious Superb Gem Proof glittering with untoned brilliance. The cameo devices are virtually flawless as are the brilliant fields. Only 160 Proofs struck. Absolutely gorgeous mint color and surfaces here. Sleek gold mirror fields reflected the polish from the dies perfection, and maintained with loving care ever since, 115 years to be precise! The devices too, are well frosted by the dies, including the stars and date as well as the lettering, enough so to earn the valued "cameo" designation from NGC. Of course the strike has to be perfect, with no weak areas whatsoever since Proofs were struck on the Mint’s hydraulic press (not the usual electrically operated one used for everyday strikes). Proof mintage for the year was on a par with other dates after the turn of the 20th century, but not too many considering a few may have been spent or lost over the years, or otherwise mishandled. No one knows for certain but many things were chipping away at the number available for collectors. Here is a high end gem for the specialist. Pop 4; 3 in PF-68 (PCGS # 87932) .

We know of a few impaired to low-level examples, but this lovely Gem Cameo 1907 is well nigh among the nicest representatives of this issue on the market today. Both sides wallow in smooth finish; further, the fields are bereft of bothersome marks. We do not find copper spots or areas of striking incompleteness, either. Best of all, the fields have been imparted with a deep reflectivity. Pop 15; 20 finer (PCGS # 87933) .

1907. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo CAC Approved. A well struck brilliant cameo gem. Only 154 struck. This coin retains strong eye appeal and outstanding surfaces in every way. The Philadelphia Mint achieved the fashionable orange-peel fields. This is quite remarkable to study, the fields appear perfectly reflective to the naked eye, but when a magnifier is applied, the mirror finish seems to break up into tiny interlocking facets that ripple. The blend of the all brilliant devices with orange peel fields produces a most charming effect.

1907. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. A dazzeling golden-orange cameo Proof specimen. Only 154 Proofs struck. As one might easily surmise, this is a resplendent 1907 Liberty Quarter Eagle, and it is final year of the Type. In terms of eye appeal this is one of the choicest, most attractive toned examples we have offered recently. The fields are nicely mirrored and there is just the slightest bit of frost over the devices. Each side displays more visual appeal than others in comparable grade, as well as the appearance of originality. From a technical viewpoint, there is a tiny water spot on the first star (get out your magnifier), but we see no other post-striking imperfections on either side of this beautiful coin.
